This is captioning for programs that have already been created in a media format like videotape. Post production captioning (also known as Offline Captioning,) is used on documentaries, sitcoms, dramas, and feature length movies. This is the highest quality of captioning, reflecting production aesthetics and delivering the maximum level of accuracy. Offline captions can address needs such as reading rate, descriptions of sounds, and caption placement to reflect the position of the speaker (off screen, on screen). The quality of this type of captioning is generally higher than realtime captioning, since the captioner has the ability to perfect the captions prior to the creation of the closed captioned master.
